Costa Rica - Adventure Mode

A few years back we visited Costa Rica and I can honestly say we fell in love with it. It had been on my bucket list for a while and after finally finding affordable flights I booked it without any hesitation.  I am desperate to return so that I can discover more of the country, more specifically the coast line.

Costa Rica for me had it all rainforests,  volcanoes, wildlife, sandy beaches and an incredible culture and food. My trip started out in the capital, San Jose, and continued out toward the Arenal Volcano. It was here that we did the infamous jungle zip line (a shit your pants kind of activity).

The picture above is of our cabin nestled at the base of the volcano. Not only were the views breathtaking, but we were woken each morning by a team of humming birds dancing outside of the door.  The swimming pools were volcanically heated! the only downside was that some days we had to share them with the local lizard which was the size of a small baby (yes we exited very quickly, once we spotted him).

Another highlight was the waterfall trek, the water was bloody freezing but worth a dip after the sweaty hike!

Roughly a quarter of Costa Rica is made up of protected jungle, teeming with wildlife including spider monkeys and quetzal birds. Eager to view some wildlife for the second part of our trip we headed to Monteverde. Highlights from the jungle tours were spotting a Sloth, tarantula, monkeys and many different species of birds. "The rainforest is home to over 100 species of mammals, more than 400 species of birds, including 30 kinds of hummingbirds, thousands of insect species and around 2500 species of plants - containing the largest number of orchids in the world, with 34 out of 500 species worldwide.   Monteverde is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding wildlife refuges."

Getting around was surprisingly easy with a 4x4, which seem to handle the dirt roads nicely.
